Assessment/Referral

The assessment process generally begins with the client completing a brief questionnaire (prescreen).  Depending on the results of the prescreen as well as the details of why the individual is being seen, a structured clinical interview may follow.

During the interview process, the client's substance usage history will be explored to determine the level of problematic use.  Diagnostic criteria from the DSM-IV is used in determining if the client has a substance abuse or dependence problem.

If the client demonstrates sufficient criteria to make a clinical diagnosis of either abuse or dependence, the American Society of Addiction Medicine Patient Placement Criteria (ASAM-PPC2) is used to determine an appropriate level of services to meet the specific needs of the client.

Recommendations and referrals for additional services are made based on each individual's unique needs.  If services are needed, the most typical referrals made are:

bulletGeneral Substance Abuse Education
bulletDrinking Driver's School
bulletIndividual Counseling
bulletExtended Outpatient Substance Abuse Treatment
bulletIntensive Outpatient Substance Abuse Treatment
bulletPrimary Residential Substance Abuse Treatment
